Professional Guidance 1: From the Case to the Legal Project

March 27, 20261 min read

Legal work, and legal practice in particular, is no longer merely a power of attorney, a fee agreement, and traditional litigation; it has become an integrated legal project that needs planning, management, and professional discipline.

A single case involves many parties: the court, the judges and their assistants, experts, opposing parties and their lawyers, and administrative and enforcement bodies, each with its own procedural nature, particular requirements, and potential risks.

On the other side, the lawyer’s relationship with his client rests on elements no less important, most notably: defining the scope of work clearly, organizing fees, managing time and effort, controlling costs, managing communication and file updates, and monitoring the quality of the service provided.

Treating a case with a traditional work mindset leads to overlooking essential aspects, chiefly planning, risk management, the quality of professional performance, and the level of care for the client; these are elements that directly affect the client’s experience.

Adopting the “legal project” methodology helps the lawyer raise the quality of his outputs, reduce waste of time and cost, protect his client’s rights, and elevate the profession to a higher level of professionalism and organization. It can begin with simple steps such as documenting the scope of work and setting a timeline and an estimated budget for each file before starting execution.
